The National Republican Guard (GNR) announced on Monday that more than 50 individuals were detained during a “security operation within the scope of the National Horse Fair, held in Golegã and surrounding areas” from November 7 to 16.
In a statement, the authority reported that 54 people were arrested: 44 for driving under the influence of alcohol, four for physical assault, four for driving without legal authorization, and two for disobedience.
Overall, the GNR inspected 2,749 drivers and issued 667 infraction notices, including 100 for driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.
The operation aimed to “ensure safety, public order, and traffic flow” and “included patrols, criminal investigations, public order teams, traffic, protection and rescue operations, inspections, and aerial surveillance using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones.” According to the GNR, one person was identified “for using a drone in an irregular situation.”
The authority additionally disclosed that four inter-institutional inspection operations were carried out, covering 52 establishments, resulting in 21 infractions for operational irregularities and three notices for irregularities in private security.
In terms of safety and public order, assistance was provided to 16 individuals.
The GNR also reported that they inspected 87 riders, detecting 42 instances of equine circulation outside permitted hours and eight violations of animal-drawn vehicle circulation rules.
The operation involved the reinforcement of the Intervention Unit (UI), the Security and State Honors Unit (USHE), the Emergency Protection and Rescue Unit (UEPS), the National Traffic Unit (UNT), and the Fiscal Action Unit (UAF).
