A person was injured after a tanker truck carrying ammonium nitrate, a white salt used as agricultural fertilizer and in industrial explosives, overturned on Saturday morning in Setúbal.
The alert was raised at 09:09 a.m. for the lateral overturning of a vehicle on Avenida do Rio Tejo in Setúbal. The vehicle went off the road while approaching the Sapec factory.
The accident caused a “small leak” of the ammonium nitrate being transported. However, according to a source from the Setúbal Civil Protection Sub-Regional Command, the situation was quickly “contained” by local Firefighters.
The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken to Setúbal hospital.
Authorities are now waiting for cranes to arrive in order to remove the heavy vehicle, which is currently blocking access to the factory. The incident did not affect traffic flow on other roads.
Nineteen personnel from the Setúbal Firefighters, the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the INEM are on the ground, supported by eight vehicles.
