Owner of illegal home in Peniche banned from carrying out the activity

A court in Leiria has imposed restrictions on a 26-year-old woman who appeared for her first judicial interrogation today. The measures include prohibiting her from working and contacting elderly individuals, according to an official source from the GNR.

On Monday, the Institute of Social Security (ISS) closed an illegal care home in Casais Brancos, Peniche, after three elderly individuals were found alone and there were suspicions of mistreatment.

“Urgent closure is ordered immediately following an inspection by the Institute of Social Security whenever there is an imminent danger to the lives of residents, leading to their immediate removal and relocation to family members or other appropriate social responses,” the Social Security stated in a release.

The inspection was conducted by the Social Security’s enforcement services, accompanied by the GNR’s Specific Victims Investigation and Support Unit and the West Health Authority.

A GNR source explained that a search and arrest warrant issued by the Peniche Public Prosecutor’s Office was executed as part of an investigation ongoing for several months due to suspicions of elder abuse in this illegal home in the Leiria district.

“One of the concerns was to cease the activity,” the source noted.

The same source stated that the illegal care home’s surveillance system was confiscated for investigation purposes.

“The investigation indicated more people were present, but only three were found,” the source said.

Two of the elderly individuals were relocated to their families, and the third was transferred to a licensed residential care facility.
