The painter Manuel Cargaleiro, who died in June at the age of 97, is being honoured in an exhibition with ten works from the Caixa Geral de Depósitos collection installed at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon between today and September 15, the organization announced.
The “Arte Box” exhibition dedicated to the ceramicist and painter is organized by the Arte Institute and Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), from whose art collection all the works on display come. Manuel Cargaleiro, who was also a draughtsman, engraver and sculptor, left his mark on museums and galleries all over the world, and on public spaces, from churches and gardens to residential buildings and stations, such as metro stations in Paris and Lisbon.
The paintings will be on display in a boarding and disembarking area where more than 2.6 million passengers from all over the world pass through each month, the organization said in a statement about the tribute to the painter whose work was strongly inspired by traditional Portuguese tiles.
This is the second “Arte Box” exhibition in partnership with CGD to be held at Lisbon airport this year, after the bank provided works from its collection for an exhibition of Portuguese artists such as Graça Morais, Isabel Laginhas, Armanda Passos, Vieira da Silva and António Caramelo, among others.
The “Arte Box” exhibitions aim to “disseminate works by Portuguese-speaking artists, bringing culture and its artistic elements to a place characterized by its multiculturalism and diversity”, says the Arte Institute.
Outside Portugal, six “Arte Box” exhibitions were held as part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of April 25, with works by artists from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, in partnership with VisitPortugal and the Revolution Hope Imagination initiative.
Three took place at Galeão Airport in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and another three at Washington Dulles Airport in Washington DC, USA.
In 2022, two serigraphs by Júlio Pomar were loaned to be displayed at the North American airport.
Founded in 2011, the Arte Institute is a non-profit organization based in New York, which promotes the production and dissemination of Portuguese and Portuguese-speaking contemporary art artists and projects through events it produces on all continents.
Created in 1983, the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Collection has more than 1900 works, including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, installation and engraving, and its management, conservation and dissemination is the responsibility of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Foundation – Culturgest.
