“This incident represents a grave act of violence, intolerance, and hatred that is unacceptable in a Democratic State of Law and directly violates our most basic constitutional values, particularly freedom of expression, the right to cultural enjoyment and creation, and the freedom of cultural creation,” stated the voting project released by the party.
The sole deputy of PAN urges the Assembly of the Republic to condemn “the assaults on actor Adérito Lopes and other acts of violence, intolerance, and hatred towards the other actors, technical staff, and audience” of the A Barraca theater, which occurred on Tuesday.
Inês de Sousa Real also demands that parliament express its solidarity with the theater company and “its total commitment to defending freedom of expression, the right to cultural enjoyment and creation, and the freedom of cultural creation in the face of any acts attempting to attack them.”
On Tuesday, Portugal Day, an actor from the A Barraca theater company, Adérito Lopes, was assaulted by a far-right group in Lisbon while entering the free-entry show “Amor é fogo que arde sem se ver,” a tribute to Camões.
In statements to the Lusa agency, the company’s director, actress and director Maria do Céu Guerra, reported that the assault occurred around 8:00 PM as actors were arriving at Cinearte in Largo de Santos and encountered “a group of neo-Nazis with posters, programs,” with several xenophobic slogans, who began by provoking one of the actresses.
“Meanwhile, other actors were arriving. Two were provoked, and a third was violently assaulted, sustaining an eye injury and a large facial cut,” recounted Maria do Céu Guerra, noting the actor required hospital treatment.
The audience only left the venue after 10:00 PM, added the actress, who emphasized that the situation could have been worse had the Public Security Police (PSP) not intervened.
