PAN criticizes Government Program for ‘erasing’ measures of “social justice”

Inês Sousa Real, spokesperson for the PAN, criticized the Government’s Program for omitting measures she believes are essential for social justice, such as subsidies for the social energy tariff and family allowance.

“We are still in the initial review phase, but we observe measures that aim to eliminate subsidies for the social energy tariff, for example, a measure introduced in the State Budget by PAN, which socially and environmentally enabled greater fairness, preventing families from suffering cold temperatures in winter or extreme heat in summer. This was a measure of the most basic social justice,” argued Sousa Real.

The PAN deputy believes the Government should focus on “eliminating perverse subsidies.”

“Regarding the family allowance, when so many families are experiencing poverty, it makes no sense for the Government to speak of meritocracy in its program and aim to abolish the family allowance. We didn’t see the Government ending perverse subsidies for major polluters and profit-makers while providing free passes for public transport,” added the PAN spokesperson.

The Program of the XXV Constitutional Government, emerging from the May 18 elections won by the AD coalition (PSD/CDS), was delivered today in the Assembly of the Republic by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Carlos Abreu Amorim.

The government program was approved in the Council of Ministers on Thursday and will be discussed in the Assembly of the Republic on Tuesday and Wednesday.
