A member of the CPN, the highest body of the party between congresses, who was elected on the opposing list to the leader Inês de Sousa Real, has criticized the leadership’s decision to announce the major meeting through a press release. This matter, they argue, should be discussed and approved by the CPN, which is scheduled to meet this Friday evening.
A PAN member stated that the leadership is “assuming as granted something that has not even been presented” to the CPN, which is responsible for the approval of the Congress. They emphasized that, although members have been summoned for an extraordinary meeting about the Congress, “no discussion was opened about regulations,” nor was the location approved, contrary to what the party indicated in the statement.
Fernando Geração, who, like other leaders, learned about the Congress location through the media, stated that this choice “says a lot about the way” the current spokesperson and her core group have been managing PAN lately, disrespecting the party’s bodies.
The leader also warned of the possibility that the Congress may not be approved on Friday if the lack of quorum observed in several recent CPN meetings recurs.
This morning, PAN announced in a press release that the party’s 10th Congress will take place in Coimbra in December, aimed at preparing a “new political and organizational stage” and electing the party’s leadership.
PAN states that the call was requested today to the National Policy Commission’s Board and that choosing Coimbra holds a “special symbolism” for being the “municipality where the party achieved one of its main victories in the 2025 Municipal Elections,” as part of the winning coalition led by socialist Ana Abrunhosa.
The PAN spokesperson and sole deputy, Inês de Sousa Real, has already announced her intention to run for the party leadership again, promising a restructuring of the internal dynamics.
