The PAN party has expressed regret that Portugal is only now recognizing the acknowledgment of the State of Palestine as a crucial step towards a two-state solution. “Meanwhile, a child is killed every hour in the Gaza Strip (according to the UN), and we are witnessing an unacceptable humanitarian catastrophe,” stated the party led by Inês de Sousa Real in a written statement to the Lusa agency.
The PAN noted that it has “publicly condemned this genocide” and emphasized “the importance of applying economic sanctions against Israel as was done with Russia.”
“Access to food is a fundamental right, and we can only condemn the use of hunger as a method of warfare in conflict settings, particularly in Gaza, where so many children and families have died without access to food, water, or medical care,” the party lamented, referencing two initiatives presented in parliament.
The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, announced today plans to consult the President of the Republic and political parties with parliamentary representation to “consider recognizing the Palestinian State” at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
“The Government has decided to consult with His Excellency the President of the Republic and the Political Parties represented in the Assembly of the Republic, aiming to consider recognizing the Palestinian State, in a process that could be finalized during the High-Level Week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, scheduled to take place in New York next September,” announced the Prime Minister, in a statement.
