The State Head’s visit to Germany received approval from all parties except Chega, which voted against it, while the trip to the United Nations in New York was unanimously approved.
As stated in a note published today on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will conduct an official visit to Germany from September 11 to 13, at the invitation of his German counterpart, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
During this official visit, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will be welcomed at Bellevue Palace, the official residence of the President of Germany in Berlin, where a working meeting between the two heads of state will take place.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will also attend the Bürgerfest, “Citizens’ Festival,” an event held annually in the gardens of the Federal President’s official residence, to honor volunteer work and promote civic engagement among citizens, as stated in the same note.
In two letters addressed to the Assembly of the Republic, the head of state requested assent for this visit from September 11 to 13 and to travel to New York from September 20 to 25, on the occasion of the general debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the provisional list of interventions, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will speak on the first day of the general debate, Tuesday, September 23.
This will be his sixth and last representation of Portugal in the annual general debate among heads of state and government of the 193 UN member states, in which he also participated in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023. His second presidential term ends on March 9 next year.
