Parliament approves PS proposal to increase patrol allowance for GNR and PSP

The Socialist Party’s proposal was revisited on the second day of the 2026 State Budget (OE2026) specialty debate, today receiving approval with opposition from PSD and CDS-PP, abstention from the Liberal Initiative (IL), and support from other parties, after being rejected the previous day by the Budget, Finance, and Public Administration Committee.

Consequently, the patrol supplement for the National Republican Guard (GNR) will increase next year, with forecasts indicating a rise to 90.03 euros per month for sergeants and 84.13 euros per month for guards.

In 2027, the approved proposal aims to raise the monthly amount to 115.03 euros for sergeants and 109.13 euros for guards, and from 2028 onwards, the supplement “will be annually adjusted by the consumer price index.”

The initiative also includes an update to the Police of Public Security (PSP) patrol supplement in 2026, setting an increase to 84.13 euros for agents and 90.03 euros for chiefs.

In 2027, it increases to 109.13 euros for PSP agents and 115.03 euros for chiefs, and from 2028, similar to the GNR, the supplement will be annually adjusted based on inflation.

This was one of the “hot topics” of the morning debate, with PSD deputy António Rodrigues criticizing the “right to be forgotten” of the Socialist Party, whose current secretary-general was Minister of Internal Administration under António Costa’s government, suggesting these measures could have been introduced earlier as they “haven’t been changed since 2009.”

The deputy further accused José Luís Carneiro’s party of “demagoguery” and emphasized ongoing “negotiations with the security forces on these matters.”

CDS-PP’s João Almeida also criticized, responding to Socialist Miguel Costa Matos’ call for parliament to approve this measure; he accused Costa Matos of “lack of shame” and “audacity,” noting that it was the Socialist Party that caused “police and guards to take to the streets, not to protect the Portuguese, but to fight for their rights.”

This morning, several initiatives were again voted on and rejected, including the increase of the assistance subsidy for children with disabilities, chronic or oncological diseases to 100% of the reference value proposed by Livre, tax exemption on rental incomes from Liberal Initiative, and the recognition of heavy truck drivers’ profession as high-wear from Chega.
