Parliament decides on Wednesday about Chega’s proposed urgent debate.

An official from the office of the President of the Assembly of the Republic announced that José Pedro Aguiar-Branco has scheduled an extraordinary meeting of the leaders’ conference for 3 PM on Wednesday. The meeting will address Chega’s proposal for a parliamentary debate with Luís Montenegro and Maria Lúcia Amaral regarding the coordination of fire-fighting efforts.

The same source stated that Aguiar-Branco will attend the meeting in person, while representatives of the parties may participate remotely.

Chega today requested an urgent parliamentary debate about the coordination of fire-fighting efforts, with the presence of the head of the Government, Luís Montenegro, and the Minister of Internal Administration, Maria Lúcia Amaral, announced the party leader.

During an event in Cadaval, André Ventura stated, “Chega requested an urgent plenary meeting today, which is somewhat unusual for this period, but Chega believes it is justified to have the Prime Minister and the Minister of Internal Administration come to parliament to explain why this crisis was so poorly managed, and why the European Civil Protection Mechanism was only activated at that moment and not earlier.”

Chega’s request follows the refusal of a similar proposal by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, from the sole deputy of JPP, arguing that only parliamentary groups can request such discussions.

In the request sent today to the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Chega asks for a plenary session or, alternatively, an extraordinary meeting of the permanent commission, which replaces plenary sessions during parliamentary recesses.

According to Chega, it is essential “to scrutinize the Government’s activities, but also to provide the populations with answers to several questions that have been raised and remain unanswered by the Government, particularly regarding the delay in activating the European Civil Protection Mechanism,” the request states.
