Speaking to journalists, Francisco Figueira, spokesperson for the leaders’ conference and a member of the Social Democratic Party, stated that the interruption will “allow members of parliament to participate in the local election campaign, as is traditional and customary in previous legislatures.”
Francisco Figueira also noted that there will be no change to the date for the government to submit the State Budget proposal for 2026 to the Assembly of the Republic, which is set for October 10.
“This date will not change and was not even a subject of debate. It is a legally imposed date, and therefore, the Assembly of the Republic will function as usual for this purpose,” he emphasized.
Regarding other decisions made during the leaders’ conference, an election for members of certain external parliamentary bodies, specifically the selection of the Ombudsman and some judges for the Constitutional Court, is scheduled for the 26th.
Since the beginning of the legislature, no attempt has been made to elect officials to the Constitutional Court, the Ombudsman, or the Council of State.
The spokesperson for the leaders’ conference also mentioned that the first biweekly debate after the summer break, featuring Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, will take place on the 24th.
