The Assembly of the Republic will mark the first year of the war in Ukraine with a thematic debate, among other initiatives, which start this Thursday with the lighting of the facade of the parliament with the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

According to the office of the president of parliament, Augusto Santos Silva, from Thursday (23) to Friday (24) the facade of the Assembly of the Republic will be illuminated with the yellow and blue of the Ukrainian flag, starting in the late afternoon of the first day.

On Friday the 24th, the date of the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, at 09:00, a minute’s silence will be held in the Lost Steps atrium for the victims of the war, which will be attended by Ukraine’s Chargé d’Affaires in Portugal, Volodymyr Kozlov, as well as members of the Parliament’s Bureau and deputies.

The thematic debate, proposed by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, will begin at 10:00 a.m. and begin with a speech by the President himself.

The debate will be about two hours long and, besides Augusto Santos Silva’s speech, there will be time for the Government and the parties.

During voting time there will be a vote of solidarity with Ukraine, proposed by the president of parliament, and at 2:00 p.m. Santos Silva will participate in a colloquium sponsored by the Portugal-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group.

The second institutional figure of the state already presides on Thursday the opening session of the “International Conference: 1 year of war in Ukraine,” promoted by the Lusíada University of Lisbon.

The conflict in Ukraine began on February 24 of last year. The Russian invasion is justified by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for the security of Russia and several countries, including Portugal, have responded by sending arms to Ukraine and imposing political and economic sanctions on Russia.
