
A tragic accident occurred on the Elevador da Glória in Lisbon on Wednesday, September 3, resulting in the loss of 16 lives, including the brake operator and several passengers. Over 20 individuals sustained injuries, as recalled in the moment of silence vote of sympathy passed today.
The vote of sympathy, presented and read by the President of the Assembly of the Republic and joined by the Government, was unanimously approved in a meeting of the standing committee, which operates during parliamentary recesses. Following the approval, a minute of silence was observed.
Through this vote, parliament expresses deep sorrow for the tragedy, extends heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims, and wishes for the swift recovery of the injured.
“To the firefighters, emergency services, security forces, and health professionals, whose dedication allowed for a rapid response to the tragedy, we express gratitude for their selflessness and spirit of service. To the city of Lisbon, whose heart was scarred by these events, we convey a message of closeness and solidarity,” it adds.
Deputies also noted that “in the face of a tragedy of this magnitude, occurring in an iconic location of the capital, expressions of astonishment and solidarity multiplied in Lisbon and throughout the country, resonating around the world.”
“Among the victims of the Elevador da Glória accident, there are several Portuguese, but also citizens of other nationalities who were visiting our country. Portugal joins them in mourning this loss,” the vote reads.
The Elevador da Glória in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, causing 16 fatalities and injuring two dozen people, including both Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.
The deceased include five Portuguese, two South Koreans, one Swiss, three British, two Canadians, one Ukrainian, one American, and one French citizen.
Following the accident, the Government declared a national day of mourning, and the Lisbon City Council declared three days of municipal mourning.
The Elevador da Glória, managed by Carris, connects Restauradores with the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto along a route of about 265 meters and is popular with tourists.
