The decision was based on a proposal by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, following consultation with the conference of leaders.
Out of the 15 standing parliamentary committees, the PSD, the largest parliamentary group, will chair seven: Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees; Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities; Agriculture and Fisheries; Environment and Energy; Culture, Communication, Youth and Sports; State and Local Government Reform; Infrastructure, Mobility and Housing.
Chega will chair four committees: National Defense, Budget and Finance, Education, and Transparency and Deputies’ Statute.
Similarly, the PS Parliamentary Group will also chair four committees: European Affairs; Economy and Territorial Cohesion; Health; and Labor, Social Security, and Inclusion.
The allocation of committee chairs, as well as the number of deputies per group on each committee, is based on the representativeness of each parliamentary group.
For instance, in the Constitutional Affairs Committee, which will have a total of 27 members, PSD will appoint eight full-time deputies, Chega will have five, PS five, Liberal Initiative two, and Livre two.
In this committee, PCP, CDS, Left Bloc, PAN, and JPP will each have one deputy.
