Parliamentary committee approves President’s presence at celebrations in Angola

The resolution project by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Aguiar-Branco, was unanimously approved without any contestation or declarations from the members of the parliamentary committee.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will be present at the celebrations in Angola marking the 11th of November, the day commemorating the country’s proclamation of independence.

Agostinho Neto, one of the founders of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), proclaimed the independence of Angola on November 11, 1975. This date is recognized as the “Day of the Dipanda.”

He served as Head of State until his death, and was succeeded in an interim capacity by Lúcio Lara, also a founding member of the MPLA.

Lúcio Lara led the country for ten days until José Eduardo dos Santos took office. Dos Santos led this Portuguese-speaking nation for 38 years, succeeded in 2017 by João Lourenço, the current Angolan Head of State.
