The country cannot continue as it is, stated António José Seguro during a visit to the National Agricultural Fair in Santarém, urging parliamentary parties to interpret the choices made by the Portuguese in the last legislative elections.
“We have thousands of young people unable to access housing due to prohibitive prices. We have citizens waiting months for healthcare… Parties need to come together to find solutions for the concrete problems of the Portuguese,” the candidate stated.
Seguro affirmed that commitment and dialogue enhance politicians, rather than diminish them, emphasizing that “the Portuguese desire change as they face too many problems and too few solutions in their lives.”
During his visit to the National Agricultural Fair, the former PS leader highlighted the agricultural sector’s importance to the national economy, criticizing the bureaucracy linked with agricultural aid.
“I am well aware of the difficulties farmers face, from production to the distribution of products. The bureaucracy associated with existing supports often takes the farmer away from the land to fill out paperwork,” he criticized.
The candidate called for “creative solutions” in collaboration with representative organizations in the sector to support small producers and counteract a trend that “devalues those who still want to produce food in Portugal.”
“Agriculture and food production… are beneficial for the country’s economy as they create jobs and value… The country’s issue isn’t a lack of solutions. It’s a lack of political courage to implement them,” he added.
When asked about President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s speech on June 10th celebrations, António José Seguro mentioned he hadn’t listened to it in full but considered it an “affirmation of universal values” and an “appeal for cohesion at a time of extremism and division.”
“Today is June 10th, a day of national identity, a day of our union, and a day to recognize the good things we have… Understanding that united and strong, we are unbeatable is crucial,” he concluded.
