Parties must make a “solemn declaration” to enable a new Government

Former PSD politician António Capucho expressed on Wednesday evening on RTP2 that upcoming elections might be “troublesome” for both the government and the Portuguese populace, particularly if the outcome does not yield a “stable and solid” majority.

“It is troublesome in every respect, especially if the forthcoming elections do not resolve the outstanding issues, which is a stable and solid majority capable of governing,” he stated.

Capucho, who previously served as the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, argued that given the current circumstances, a coalition government may not be feasible. He emphasized the necessity for a “solemn declaration in the electoral campaign from Luís Montenegro stating that if the PS emerges as the leading party, the PS should be assured of having a government supported by the AD. Conversely, as Pedro Nuno Santos has suggested, if AD gains the upper hand, the PS should confirm this approach.”

It is noteworthy that the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has already signed the decree dissolving the Assembleia da República and calling for elections on May 18.
