Passenger air traffic in Europe rises 4.9% in August

The association noted that the increase was primarily driven by international traffic, which grew by 5.6% compared to 1.6% for domestic traffic, reflecting the recovery of travel abroad on the continent.

Airports in the European Union (EU) and countries associated with the European airspace, including Switzerland and the United Kingdom, experienced an overall increase of 4%, below the continental average.

The highest increases were recorded in Poland (15.1%), Slovenia (11.7%), and Romania (10.3%), while the worst results were seen in Latvia (-6.7%), Estonia (-4.5%), and Iceland (-2.5%).

Meanwhile, major markets showed more moderate gains, with increases of 4.2% in Germany, 3.8% in Spain, 2.8% in Italy, 2.7% in the United Kingdom, and 1% in France.

Airports in the rest of Europe, which includes Turkey, Israel, the non-EU Balkan countries, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, saw an average growth of 8.8%, with Moldova (46.6%), Israel (38.1%), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (20.4%) standing out.

Regarding cargo transport, traffic decreased by 5.8%, but remained 7% above pre-pandemic levels, with noteworthy growth in the airports of Liège (29%), Madrid (11.4%), and Milan Malpensa (6%).
