The newly elected Pope carries “a significant responsibility, which includes the legacy of the previous Pope, Pope Francis, encompassing matters of environmental defense, social rights, and peace,” stated Paulo Raimundo to journalists prior to a CDU rally in Faro.

The communist leader emphasized that Francis left “a legacy that must be continued and fulfilled.”

Paulo Raimundo confessed that he was not familiar with the new Pope, but from what he has learned, he appears to be “in line with the previous Pope, a man focused on social justice, peace, environmental defense, and the rights of the underprivileged.”

The general secretary of the PCP also noted that this decision is “highly significant, especially for Catholics, but not exclusively for them.”

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, aged 69, was elected Pope today after two days of conclave in Vatican City and has assumed the name Leo XIV.

Born in Chicago, United States, the new Pope has Spanish ancestry and Peruvian nationality, and he is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine.

Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
