“I have no doubts that, perhaps sooner than expected, the President will return to what we know. I had the opportunity to send him a message with this exact idea of wishing him a speedy recovery,” stated Paulo Raimundo to journalists during a visit to Santa Maria Secondary School in Sintra, as part of the national action “Another Direction for the Country: Rejecting the Labor Package, Exploitation, and Injustices.”
When asked whether the care Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is receiving at São João Hospital in Porto is proof that the National Health Service (SNS) functions, Paulo Raimundo remarked, “this example wasn’t necessary.”
“It is proof that the President is in very good hands, as are all those who can access the National Health Service. The problem is not the National Health Service; the problem is access and the path,” he stated.
When further questioned about whether the health status of the President of the Republic should be public, the PCP secretary-general argued that the Presidency has “all the mechanisms at its disposal to monitor the clinical situation” of the main state body.
“The President of the Republic is concerned about his health, which sometimes might not seem apparent, but he is indeed concerned about health, so I honestly think it’s not an issue,” he concluded.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa underwent emergency surgery on Monday night at São João Hospital in Porto after feeling unwell upon returning from Amarante, from the funeral of Engineer António Mota.
The President of the Republic is expected to remain hospitalized for two days at São João Hospital in Porto, where he was operated on for a “strangulated hernia,” and recovery could take up to two weeks.
