António Filipe, speaking to journalists at the conclusion of a visit to the Arsenal do Alfeite, at the naval base in Laranjeiro, Almada, expressed that both in parliamentary and public debates, there were voices from reputable constitutionalists regarding the unconstitutionality of many provisions of the bill passed in the Assembly of the Republic.
“I believe the President of the Republic’s decision is fully justified,” emphasized the presidential candidate António Filipe, a jurist, former PCP deputy, and former vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic.
On Wednesday, the President of the Republic sent to the Constitutional Court the parliament’s decree altering the legal regime of entry, stay, exit, and removal of foreigners from the national territory, approved by PSD, Chega, and CDS-PP.
The request for review, urgently solicited by the head of state, challenges the changes to family reunification introduced in the foreign entry regime, invoking the principle of family unity and the best interest of the child.

The left considers the President of the Republic’s decision the “most sensible” one. Meanwhile, the right argues that the law is urgent and insists it adheres to the articles of the Constitution.
