“The electoral result fell far short of expectations and the recognition due to the elected and candidates of CDU,” stated a communiqué released by the Beja Regional Organization of the PCP. The statement noted that the CDU secured the councils of Aljustrel, Barrancos, and Cuba and engaged in “very close contests” in Ferreira do Alentejo and Moura.
The regional organization of the PCP also highlighted achieving majorities in 27 parish councils, electing 72 members to municipal assemblies, 25 in municipal councils, and 218 in parish assemblies.
“This outcome, in these aspects, refutes predictions about the inevitable decline of CDU and confirms the real potential to advance, reclaim, and win new municipalities,” the communiqué reads.
“The manner in which the campaign was conducted, the expansion of the unitary space, the hundreds of contacts made, the proximity work carried out that are hallmarks of the CDU did not end on October 12 and, regardless of the results, are seeds left for the ongoing work necessary to defend the interests of the populations and fight for development and well-being,” it added.
The regional organization of the PCP further commented that the municipal elections on October 12 “took place after a period of successive national scope elections that resulted in the configuration of a new party framework and a greater emphasis on national issues over local matters.”
