A parliamentary question addressed to Paulo Rangel by Paula Santos, the PCP parliamentary leader, has revealed that the state-owned Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda (INCM) is set to produce two million coins for the State of Israel by 2025.
The PCP states that an official delegation from the Israeli government is also expected to visit the INCM to mark the minting of the first coins.
The party emphasized that for more than two years, Israel has been conducting a genocide in the Gaza Strip, committing daily crimes and atrocities against the Palestinian people, which have reached unprecedented levels.
The statement notes numerous casualties, including hundreds of thousands of Palestinians killed or injured, many of whom are children, as a result of what it describes as genocide by Israel.
The PCP argues that relations between the Portuguese and Israeli governments should not imply complicity with Israel’s ongoing aggression and violation of Palestinian national rights.
After Portugal recognized the State of Palestine last September, the PCP insists it is crucial for the Portuguese government to actively support the establishment of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and advocate for the right of return for Palestinian refugees.
In their question to Paulo Rangel, the PCP queries the government’s awareness of the alleged coin production for Israel.
The party questions whether the production of two million Israeli coins by a Portuguese public company, along with an Israeli government delegation’s visit related to this plan, could be seen as inappropriate given Israel’s ongoing policies towards the Palestinian people.
The PCP also demands to know what specific measures the government is taking to pressure Israel into respecting and fulfilling Palestinian national rights as dictated by numerous UN resolutions.
