PCP proposes that the minimum pension for former combatants be equal to the minimum wage.

In a bill submitted today to the Assembly of the Republic, the PCP asserts that “veterans, who were sacrificed in an unjust war, should receive public recognition, not only in words and symbolic gestures but especially through concrete support capable of improving their living conditions.”

The PCP proposes that veterans whose pensions are below the national minimum wage should “have their pensions recalculated to reach this amount.”

The party suggests that this adjustment be implemented gradually, with veterans’ pensions reaching 80% of the national minimum wage in the first year following the legislation’s enactment, and achieving the full amount by the end of three years.

In addition to this measure, the party also recommends the introduction of a lifetime pension supplement, amounting to 100 euros monthly, for veterans benefiting from the special pension supplement or the lifetime pension increase.

In the bill’s explanatory memorandum—previously submitted by the PCP to the Assembly of the Republic in 2022, where it was rejected—the party argues that these measures should have been included in the Statute of Former Combatants, approved by parliament in 2020, which “fell short of expectations.”

“The rejection of these proposals by the PS and PSD led the PCP to reconsider its voting stance in the final global vote, opting for abstention. While acknowledging the limited advances enshrined in the approved Statute of Former Combatants, the PCP regrets the missed opportunity to achieve more, which was both possible and fair,” the statement says.

By presenting these proposals, the PCP asserts that it is fulfilling its “commitment to veterans,” aiming to ensure their “dignification and social and economic appreciation” and safeguarding their rights.
