The parliamentary group of the PCP has submitted a query in the Assembly of the Republic regarding the expansion project for the Beja hospital, initially discussed during the specialty analysis of the State Budget for 2025. Amendments were approved to ensure that the government commences the construction work within the current year.
The PCP emphasized in its communication to the Health Minister, Ana Paula Martins, that the renovation and expansion of Hospital José Joaquim Fernandes are critical for healthcare delivery in the Beja district. The project aims to enhance recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals by providing improved working conditions and professional development opportunities.
Following the redefinition project for the hospital’s service profile, detailed in the Master Plan, functional program reorganization, and the economic feasibility study delivered in July 2024, the government received a report highlighting the current facility’s limitations and inadequacies.
The PCP states that these conditions prevent the hospital from delivering quality healthcare to the population within the influence area of the Unidade Local de Saúde do Baixo Alentejo (ULSBA).
In the document, the parliamentary group asserts the importance of government clarification on the project’s status due to the ongoing difficulties in accessing healthcare and given that the 2025 State Budget has been in force for over six months. The group seeks details on measures already taken to begin the Hospital José Joaquim Fernandes construction.
The PCP also inquires about plans to ensure the completion of the new building and the subsequent rehabilitation of existing infrastructure by 2029.
The estimated cost for the requalification and expansion of Hospital José Joaquim Fernandes is 118 million euros, with construction set to begin in the second half of 2026.
