“As the government announces potential contacts regarding the recognition of the State of Palestine, with a decision possibly delayed until September, the PCP reiterates that this decision is urgent and should have already been implemented, as the PCP has repeatedly proposed in the Assembly of the Republic,” stated a communiqué from the party led by Paulo Raimundo.
From the communists’ perspective, the announcement made today by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro “is inseparable from public opinion pressure and the broad solidarity movement with the Palestinian people in light of ongoing crimes perpetrated by the State of Israel.”
For the PCP, the recognition of the State of Palestine “should not be subject to external constraints and delays, as the Government intends.”
This decision, according to the communists, “must necessarily be accompanied by the condemnation and demand for the end of the ongoing genocide, bombings, and attacks by the State of Israel in Gaza and the West Bank.”
The PCP also calls for the “realization of the national rights of the Palestinian people, an essential condition for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.”
The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, announced today that he will consult the President of the Republic and political parties with parliamentary representation to “consider the recognition of the Palestinian State” at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
“The Government has decided to consult His Excellency the President of the Republic and the Political Parties with representation in the Assembly of the Republic, with a view to considering the recognition of the Palestinian State, in a procedure that may be concluded during the High-Level week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, to be held in New York next September,” the Prime Minister announced in a statement.
