“We know we have every reason to be confident, those who are connected to the people, those who are linked to concrete problems, those who have candidates from that reality, connected to the world of work, the struggles for housing, the struggles for transport, those who are honest, hardworking, and competent, have every reason to be confident,” he declared.
Paulo Raimundo spoke to journalists in Funchal after a public session organized by the Unitary Democratic Coalition (PCP/PEV) at the University of Madeira, reiterating the message he had already delivered to an audience of dozens of militants, supporters, activists, and municipal candidates.
The session focused primarily on the October 12 municipal elections, in which the CDU is fielding candidates for all municipal bodies, highlighted the communist secretary-general, noting that they are presenting 12,000 independent candidates, more than any other party.
Paulo Raimundo also mentioned the intent to grow in Madeira, acknowledging a “very low number of elected officials,” and emphasized that, in some Madeiran parishes, only PSD and CDU will be competing, “an opportunity for those demanding change.”
When asked about the strategies to win over the electorate, the communist leader highlighted “work, honesty, and competence,” stressing that this is “the way of being” for the CDU and, on the other hand, “these are the candidates.”
“Activists, people connected to life, to reality, to life as it is,” he reinforced.
In turn, the coordinator of the PCP in Madeira, Edgar Silva, confirmed that the candidacies are led by activists and workers who share the CDU’s struggles, appealing for mobilization in the elections to “build a great mass campaign.”
In his speech, he highlighted “the housing problem” and criticized the “lack of rigor” in not using “objective criteria” in the allocation of social housing.
