PCP wants to restore the retirement age to 65 years and eliminate penalties

The communist parliamentarian Alfredo Maia announced new legislative proposals aimed at ensuring lifetime workers’ access to retirement benefits during a press conference.

“A retirement that can be enjoyed in good health and preventing workers from being penalized by the increase in life expectancy,” emphasized Alfredo Maia.

One of the proposals seeks to restore the legal retirement age to 65, abolishing the sustainability factor, and reviews special regimes for early retirement access.

Maia observed that by 2025, the legal retirement age is set to reach 66 years and seven months, indicating a potential increase in the coming years.

“This represents a deeply unfair penalty for workers who, like the rest of the population, benefit from scientific and clinical advances,” he argued.

In addition to restoring retirement age to 65, the proposal demands the removal of penalties for workers compelled into early retirement, particularly those experiencing long-term unemployment.

“The situation created for these workers has been deeply unjust, as they have been pushed into early retirement and suffered cuts of over 50%, resulting in poverty and deteriorating living conditions for these retirees,” stated the proposal from the communist group.

Speaking to journalists, Maia mentioned a project to increase the number of minimum pension brackets and the percentage linkage to the Social Support Index (IAS).

The party’s stance includes increasing minimum pensions and adjusting the fourth bracket, along with creating a fifth and sixth bracket within the Social Security system to progressively approach the poverty threshold.

The communist faction considers ongoing measures to fight poverty crucial, emphasizing the importance of boosting social benefits to deepen distributive justice inherent to Social Security, in solidarity with those facing economic and social vulnerability.

If approved, the plan would address an “injustice to those who have contributed for 30, 40, or more years, by increasing linkage percentages to the IAS for other pensions,” according to the party.
