PCP warns “democrats” after interview: “First they attack communists…”

Portuguese lawmaker António Filipe took to social media on Wednesday to discuss the interview with the Secretary-General of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), Paulo Raimundo, which has prompted

“It is important that all democrats understand that the attack on the PCP in the form of an ‘interview’ on RTP is part of a global offensive against democracy currently underway,” he wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

Citing a work by Martin Niemöller, which recalls the fascism experienced in Europe during Nazi Germany, António Filipe added: “First they attack the communists…”

Paulo Raimundo was interviewed on Monday as part of the Legislative elections, during which the topic of the war in Ukraine was discussed for approximately ten minutes. Following this segment, which the PCP deemed a “provocation,” the party announced its intention to take legal action.

“Faced with the provocation that occurred on RTP, the PCP will employ all legal means. Fascism and war know that they have the firmness of the PCP as their enemy,” reads a statement published on Monday.

The fourth in a series of interviews by RTP with party leaders represented in parliament, conducted in the context of the Legislative elections, drew significant criticism on social media, notably from Communist figures, for its focus on the war in Ukraine.
