The first meeting of the Porto Metropolitan Council, which took place this morning, was held behind closed doors despite the law mandating that sessions are public. This meeting served to elect the new president and the two vice-presidents of the AMP’s deliberative body.
As a result, journalists left the venue and filed a complaint with the Journalist Union.
In a statement sent to the media, the Porto Metropolitan Area announced that Pedro Duarte was elected for the 2025-2029 term.
The vice-presidency of the AMP will be held by the mayors of Santa Maria da Feira, the Social Democrat Amadeu Albergaria, and Arouca, the Socialist Margarida Belém.
The proposed list for the new Metropolitan Executive Committee was also approved. This list, which has Agostinho Branquinho as the first-secretary and metropolitan secretaries Orlando Leal, Ana Amorim, Tiago Araújo, and Andreia Ferreira, will be subjected to voting in the municipal assemblies of the AMP’s member municipalities.
The AMP indicated that Pedro Duarte emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation among the 17 municipalities of the AMP, advocating for constructive dialogue and an ambitious vision to consolidate the AMP as a territory of innovation, competitiveness, and sustainable development.
Within the Porto Metropolitan Area, comprising 17 municipalities, the Socialist Party secured eight electoral victories, the Social Democratic Party also won eight, and the CDS-PP won one.
