
The announcement was made by the sole candidate for the presidency of the Board of Directors of ANMP, Pedro Pimpão, ahead of the XXVII Congress of this entity. This weekend event gathers hundreds of mayors in Viana do Castelo to elect a new leadership and discuss topics such as decentralization and local finances.
Pedro Duarte, who was elected president of the Porto municipality on October 12, is contending for the leading body between ANMP Congresses, following the Porto municipality’s decision to rejoin the association during the first meeting of the new executive held on November 10.
The exit of the Porto municipality from ANMP occurred in April 2022 due to the decentralization of powers process.
The current president of the Board of Directors of ANMP, Luísa Salgueiro, is expected to be succeeded by the mayor of Pombal, Pedro Pimpão, the sole candidate.
The mayor of Matosinhos, re-elected for a third term in the last local elections, is anticipated to chair the Congress Table.
ANMP holds congresses every two years, with only the one following municipal elections being elective.
The Board of Directors of ANMP is an executive body consisting of a president, five vice-presidents, and 11 members, elected by delegates at the National Congress in a multi-member list.
In the local elections held on October 12, PSD, either with its own lists or in coalitions, won in 136 municipalities, compared to 128 for PS. This contrasts with 2021, when PSD won in 114 municipalities, compared to 149 by the socialists.
