Amid the sound of drums and chants such as “the people won’t forget, day 18 is with PS” and “Pedro, friend, Covilhã is with you,” the socialist leader toured the center of Covilhã, in the district of Castelo Branco, accompanied by the president of the PS, Carlos César.
Buoyed by the enthusiastic reception, Pedro Nuno Santos joined in with the drums and tambourine, shared kisses, and took selfies. He recalled the social media video where the secretary-general of PCP, Paulo Raimundo, asked if anyone knew a deputy from Castelo Branco.
“And he encountered a citizen from Castelo Branco, here in Covilhã, who said yes, I know, Nuno Fazenda, who is a great deputy and who has defended the district very well in the Assembly of the Republic. Nuno Fazenda is this gentleman who was the Secretary of State for Commerce and Tourism and is known by the people,” he stated, pointing to the PS head of the list in the district for the legislative elections.
On this note, Pedro Nuno Santos added, “In fact, I take this opportunity to appeal to many citizens who vote on the left here in the district to vote for PS. Obviously, the other parties have no chance of electing a deputy here, but the PS has a chance to elect one more, and that is a great contribution to defeating the AD.”
In recent years, the PS has dominated the Castelo Branco electoral circle, managing to elect three deputies in the legislative elections of 2019 and 2022, a situation that changed in 2024, with the socialists losing a mandate.
The socialist leader also encountered a citizen who claimed to have always voted for Mário Soares and PS, recalling the investments made in the district by the socialist governments.
“Did you hear? In the district of Castelo Branco, most of the investments were made by the PS governments. I want the district of Castelo Branco to know that it can continue counting on us,” responded the socialist leader.
To a pensioner who mentioned having a pension of 300 euros and “only a seven-euro increase,” he replied, “We need to win the elections to be able to improve pensions.”
