“I had the opportunity to state, on August 28, citing tax experts, that the change in IRS withholding tables would result in fewer refunds or possibly payments the following year,” said Pedro Nuno Santos following a visit to a PSP police station in Barreiro, Setúbal district.
“The reduction in IRS implies a change in the withholding table. It does not imply altering the withholding table beyond what is justified,” added the PS leader.
Pedro Nuno Santos believes the changes in the IRS withholding table were made “because the AD Government anticipated early elections” and “Luís Montenegro governs solely with elections in mind.”
Santos also pointed to the current executive’s governance style, citing an alleged directive from the Ministry of Health to process increased salaries for doctors next week, which typically should occur in May.
“There is a pattern of behavior from this Portuguese Government leader, Luís Montenegro. Today’s example is the advancement of payments to doctors. The sole motivation for these decisions, this approach, is electoral,” stated the PS leader.
“This is not acceptable in a politician. We must condemn this form of manipulation, this persistent attempt to deceive by Luís Montenegro in his political management,” argued the socialist leader.
During his visit to the 5th PSP Station in Barreiro, Pedro Nuno Santos reiterated the socialists’ concern about the increase in violent crime in the country, violence among youths, and rape cases.
