The municipal company responsible for managing the parks in this Lisbon district announced that it will now be possible to visit about 55% of the park’s area. This follows efforts to remove fallen trees, clear pathways, and stabilize walls after the recent storm.
Available once again are the routes connecting the Palácio Nacional da Pena to Cruz Alta and Vale dos Lagos, via the Fonte dos Passarinhos. This also includes access to the Jardim das Camélias, and a path has been reopened between Vale dos Lagos and the Chalet da Condessa d’Edla, the municipal company stated.
Due to ongoing interventions, it is still not possible to visit areas such as Abegoria, Jardim Inglês, Estufa Fria, Pérgola da Feteira da Condessa d’Edla, and Alto do Chá.
Access to prohibited areas will be blocked by gates.
The passage of depression Martinho resulted in 312 trees of various species being knocked down in this park, which has been closed since March 19.
The storm, occurring on the night of March 19 to 20, caused around 100,000 trees to fall, affecting 280 hectares out of the approximately 1,000 hectares managed by Parques de Sintra.
The depression was characterized by intense rain and extremely strong winds, with gusts reaching 169 kilometers per hour at Cabo da Roca.
The high level of precipitation led to soil saturation, facilitating the uprooting of trees, which in this area have shallow roots, as explained by Parques de Sintra.
The company added that it has already initiated a recovery project for the forest areas affected by the storm. This project is outlined according to priorities identified through detailed mapping of the terrain and focuses on planting native species.
