Petitions against labor setbacks exceed 79,000 signatures

The petition against “unacceptable setbacks in the rights of women, mothers, and babies” has increased its support from nearly 25,000 signatures in early August to 47,690 today. It calls for the Assembly of the Republic to reject or alter proposals that limit breastfeeding leave up to two years, reject the revocation of leave for gestational mourning, and reject the alteration of flexible work hours.

The petition titled “Open Letter for Family Rights” gathered 14,033 signatures as of August 1 and now has 31,679 petitioners. It shares similar objectives, urging the Assembly of the Republic and the Government not to proceed with a set of labor law changes, arguing they represent “a serious setback in labor, social, and family rights, with a significant impact on women, children, and families.”

The information available on the Assembly of the Republic’s page indicates that any citizen can create a petition. A parliamentary committee is expected to hear petitioners if their petition exceeds a thousand signatures, allowing them to present their reasons in person and for the deputies to express their stance on the matter.

If a petition gathers more than 2,500 signatures but does not exceed 7,500 names, it is mandatory for it to be debated in a parliamentary committee in a public meeting, with the parties represented.
