Maria José Palla, a former professor at Universidade Nova, passed away four days shy of her 82nd birthday. She lived in Paris, where she was in exile, and earned her doctorate at the Sorbonne University with a dissertation on symbolic imagery in Gil Vicente’s work.
With a degree in Art History from École du Louvre in Paris, Palla authored several books and articles on Gil Vicente, 16th-century theater, and Portuguese Renaissance painting. She later turned to photography, organizing multiple exhibitions both in Portugal and abroad.
In Paris, she studied photography and cinema under filmmaker Jean Rouch (1917-2004).
Maria José Palla was born in Lisbon on July 30, 1943.
