The collection of photographs by António Pedro Santos, recently honored, illustrated reports under the generic title “Hope Has Won in Syria,” conducted following the deposition of Bashar al-Assad, announced the Clube de Jornalistas, promoter of the Prémios Gazeta.
The Prémios Gazeta 2024 jury, marking its 40th edition, awarded the Gazeta de Mérito prize to Mário Zambujal, highlighting his “long journalistic career,” which began in the 1960s at the newspaper A Bola.
Mário Zambujal later worked at Diário de Lisboa, served as deputy director of Record, editor-in-chief at O Século and Diário de Notícias, director of Mundo Desportivo, O Jornal, and Se7e, interim director of Tal & Qual, and columnist for 24 Horas. At RTP, where he remained for 20 years, he stood out as the presenter of the sports program “Grande Encontro.”
“A renowned writer, he was awarded the rank of Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique in 1984 and the Cultural Merit Medal from the Lisbon City Council in 2016. He chaired the Clube de Jornalistas from 2007 to 2021,” the statement notes.
The Gazeta de Televisão prize was awarded to Jacinto Godinho and Carlos Oliveira, creators of the documentary “The Eyes of the Revolution,” broadcast on RTP 1 on April 26, 2024.
“Starting from the public television archive, an investigation is developed into the first images of April 25, 1974, captured by a French television team, who knew about the coup in advance; by an RTP operator and a camera assistant, who ventured into the field on their own initiative; and by an amateur filmmaker,” the Clube de Jornalistas states.
The Gazeta de Imprensa prize was given to Clara Teixeira, Joana Loureiro, Luísa Oliveira, Rui Antunes, Sara Rodrigues, and Sónia Calheiros (texts), Lucília Monteiro, Luís Barra, and José Carlos Carvalho (photos), for the report “Immigrants — The Arms That Feed Us,” published on February 1, 2024, in Visão magazine.
In this journalistic work, the authors “demonstrate—through an exhaustive approach—how positive the contribution of ‘those who came from afar, seeking their slice of sunshine’ is for the country’s wealth in various domains,” the promoter highlights.
Maria Augusta Casaca won the Gazeta de Rádio prize, after traveling the country for the report “April Passed Here,” broadcast on TSF on April 24, 2024, “in search of traces and testimonies of the ‘cultural and civic action campaigns.'”
The Gazeta de Multimédia prize was won by Joana Gorjão Henriques (research and text), Joana Bougard (multimedia editing), and José Carvalheiro (image editing), authors of “Anatomy of a Detention by PSP,” a report published by the newspaper Público on November 3, 2024.
According to the Clube de Jornalistas, “the work utilizes a set of technical resources and a multitude of sources to meticulously reconstruct the case of the youths detained after a protest against an anti-immigration rally promoted by Chega.”
Tatiana Felício was distinguished with the Gazeta Revelação prize for the report “The River That Unites Us,” from the A1 Doc series, broadcast on Antena 1 on March 19, 2024, described as “a record, with particular sensitivity, of the relationships between the towns of Alcoutim (Portugal) and Sanlúcar del Guadiana (Spain), separated by the border river, but which throughout history have never ceased to cultivate a feeling of common belonging.”
Lastly, the Gazeta de Imprensa Regional prize, managed by the Clube de Jornalistas, was awarded to Diário do Alentejo, a weekly newspaper headquartered in Beja, described as “an independent regionalist.”
Founded on June 1, 1932, Diário do Alentejo is presented as “the only public newspaper in the country,” revealing itself to be “particularly attentive to the new social realities of a changing region, including the significant presence of migrant communities.”
