Normally, pigs are declared in April, August, and December.
“During the month of August, there is another mandatory period for the Declaration of Swine Stocks (DES),” reminded the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV) in a statement.
The declarations can be made by operators on the portal of the Institute for Financing Agriculture and Fisheries (IFAP), at the departments of Regional Food and Veterinary Services, or at agricultural organizations that have an agreement with the IFAP.
If this measure is not complied with, pig farmers face penalties, such as the suspension of swine transit guide issuance for life by the operator through iDigital, until the situation is rectified.
This sanitary measure aims to control Aujeszky’s disease.
The virus, which affects the respiratory and reproductive systems of pigs, can also be transmitted through pigs to other animals.
