An arrest was made on Thursday under an international warrant issued in July of this year by Brazil, relating to acts that led to a conviction in September 2005.
The Criminal Police (PJ) announced that the man was part of a criminal organization operating in the Brazilian states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Bahia, and Goiás. The group exported “large quantities” of drugs to Europe, particularly to Portugal and Spain, concealed in “frozen bovine intestines.”
The Portuguese citizen was part of the “main group responsible for centralizing and coordinating illicit activities,” with duties including procuring the intestines used to hide the drugs and “establishing export and import companies.”
Approximately two decades ago, authorities seized 1,691 kilograms of cocaine.
The man will be presented to the Lisbon Court of Appeal for the application of coercive measures while awaiting a decision on extradition to Brazil.
