PJ promotes debate on the ‘Art of Forgery’ on Thursday

The Scientific Police Laboratory of Portugal’s Polícia Judiciária (PJ) will host a meeting this Thursday to discuss the issue of “artwork forgery,” focusing on this phenomenon from a criminal investigation perspective, as well as the motivations and profiles of forgers, among other topics.

A statement released to the press indicates that the event will emphasize the role that the PJ has played in addressing this crime, which is highlighted in some studies as a prominent issue in terms of the parallel economy.

The event will feature presentations analyzing the forgery of artwork from various angles, proposing a multidisciplinary approach to this phenomenon. This approach aims to cover diverse aspects such as the economic situation and market value, motivations and profiles of forgers, the production chain and participants, criminal investigation, authenticity verification, expert opinions and forensic assessments, and the contributions of technical-scientific knowledge in producing expert evidence.

The event will include internal participants from Criminal Investigation and the Scientific Police Laboratory, along with “contributions from external entities that have collaborated in investigations conducted by the PJ.”

There will also be an exhibition of pictorial artworks, showcasing both authentic and forged pieces attributed to painters well known to the general public.

Participants will be invited to observe, analyze, and formulate an opinion regarding the authenticity of these artworks.

The event is organized in partnership with the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo Directorate and the Northern Directorate.
