Two foreign nationals have been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking by air, the Judiciary Police (PJ) announced on Saturday.
A 48-year-old woman is suspected of smuggling cocaine from a South American country to Lisbon, concealed within oatmeal packages. According to the PJ, if this cocaine had entered illegal distribution circuits, it “would be sufficient for the preparation of at least 9,280 individual doses.”
A 21-year-old man, meanwhile, traveled from a Southeast Asian country to Lisbon carrying “a considerable quantity of cannabis in his luggage, which, if it had reached illegal distribution channels, would be sufficient for at least 6,700 individual doses.”
The detainees were brought before a judicial inquiry, where they were remanded in custody.
In a statement, the PJ clarified that these arrests occurred as part of regular monitoring of passengers’ movements from countries considered to be at risk, “aimed at preventing the introduction of narcotics into national territory and other European countries through international airports.”
