“I asked the commissioner, who will analyze our plan, for support from the Commission for a robust and comprehensive plan for the Douro,” stated the minister in comments to journalists, on the sidelines of the European Union (EU) Agriculture Council meeting.
The plan includes support measures for cooperative wineries and producers, estimated at 100 million euros.
The minister reiterated the existence of an imbalance between supply and demand.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Sea has prepared the action plan for sustainable management and enhancement of the Douro Demarcated Region’s (RDD) wine sector, with integrated actions for reducing surpluses, adjusting production potential, and strengthening value creation.
Throughout the region, producers have expressed concerns about not being able to market their grapes this harvest or selling them at low prices, while merchants complain of full stocks and declining wine sales.
