Plans for the weekend Rain doesn’t let up: Find out what to expect

The recent rainfall has struck with intensity, putting parts of the country on alert as adverse weather conditions impact several areas. These rainy conditions are expected to persist throughout the weekend in mainland Portugal.

The districts of Aveiro, Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Guarda, Coimbra, and Leiria are currently under an orange warning due to heavy rain, effective until Saturday.

According to forecasts from the Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the northern region will experience “cloudy or overcast skies,” with cloud cover decreasing along the coast in the morning and gradually spreading to other areas in the afternoon.

Rainfall is expected to display “periods of rain until early morning, which will be persistent and sometimes heavy,” and it “may occur sporadically in the interior until mid-afternoon.”

The wind is predicted to be “generally weak,” but in highland areas, it could be “moderate to strong until early morning.”

A drop in minimum temperature is foreseen.

In the central and southern regions, similar conditions are anticipated. However, “periods of rain” might occur “until mid-afternoon” in the central region, and “temporarily” in the southern region.

In Greater Lisbon, the sky is also expected to be “cloudy or overcast” with “periods of rain until mid-afternoon, being persistent and sometimes heavy.” In Greater Porto, rain will continue “until early morning.”

Will the rain subside on Sunday? “Weak or scattered”

On Sunday, the IPMA indicates that the sky will be “generally cloudy, with periods of heavy cloudiness north of the Montejunto-Estrela mountain system, and until early morning in the Baixo Alentejo.”

There is a “chance of weak and scattered precipitation in Minho and Douro Litoral, and until early morning in Baixo Alentejo.”

The wind is expected to blow “light to moderate,” but could be “strong in the highlands of central and southern regions at the start of the day.”

Finally, a “decrease in temperature, especially the minimum temperature, is expected in the central and southern regions.”

Seven districts under orange warning (until Saturday) due to adverse weather

It should be noted that, according to IPMA, the districts of Aveiro, Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Guarda, Coimbra, and Leiria remain under an orange warning until Saturday due to persistent and sometimes heavy precipitation.

Bragança and Vila Real have been under an orange warning since early this afternoon due to persistent and sometimes heavy precipitation, with this status continuing until 6 a.m. on Saturday, after which it changes to a yellow warning until 9 a.m.

For similar reasons, the districts of Aveiro, Coimbra, Viseu, and Leiria are under an orange warning until 9 a.m. on Saturday, then shifting to yellow between 9 a.m. and noon, while the Guarda district is under an orange warning until noon on Saturday, transitioning to yellow until 3 p.m.

Severe weather continues! Almost all districts will be under warning on Saturday

Fifteen districts in the mainland are being affected by persistent and sometimes heavy rainfall until Saturday, with seven already under an orange warning, stated the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) today.
