The rain has returned and appears to be staying, at least for this Saturday, December 13. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts the possibility of showers in the southern region of the country along with a “slight drop in minimum temperature.”
The IPMA indicates that, generally, the sky will be “slightly cloudy or clear,” with “periods of heavy clouds in the southern region until late morning.”
The southern region will also experience “showers until mid-morning.”
There will also be a “slight drop in the minimum temperature” and a “rise in the maximum temperature.”
A similar scenario is expected in Greater Lisbon, with a “possibility of light showers until the early morning.” The wind will blow from “light to moderate from the northeast.”
In Greater Porto, the wind will be “light from the east/northeast,” with a “slight drop in minimum temperature” and “rise in maximum temperature.”
According to data available on the IPMA website, Braga and Sagres will record a maximum temperature of 20ºC, the highest in the country. Meanwhile, the city of Guarda is set to record a maximum of 10ºC with a minimum of 4ºC.
It should be noted that, yesterday, Friday, Guarda and Castelo Branco were under an orange warning due to the forecast of snow above 1400/1600 meters of altitude, with accumulation potentially exceeding 25 cm at the highest points of Serra da Estrela, due to the passage of the depression Emilia.
According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), this warning was in effect from 03h00 Friday until 00h00 on Saturday.

The Emilia depression will affect mainland Portugal and Madeira throughout Friday. There are yellow, orange, and red warnings across the country, and no district will be spared from the rain.
What precautions should you take during the cold?
The Public Security Police (PSP) has issued a statement with a list of safety tips, particularly for the elderly. During winter, it is not uncommon for fires to break out in homes due to negligence, causing significant damage and, sometimes, injuries or fatalities.
The PSP advises the following precautions:
- “Keep heaters away from furniture, curtains, and other flammable materials;
- Never dry clothes on heaters or fireplaces;
- Always turn off heating devices before going to bed or leaving the house;
- Do not leave candles burning unattended;
- Avoid overloading electric sockets;
- Be cautious when using braziers;
- Never leave the house with the stove or water heater on;
- In case of fire or emergency, call 112.”

With the onset of cold weather, the Public Security Police (PSP) has issued a list of safety advice to prevent domestic accidents and crimes. The recommendations include precautions with heaters and fireplaces, as well as tips to avoid scams and thefts.
