A petition is currently underway demanding the reinstatement of the main chief at the Tires women’s prison, following the retirement of the previous chief.
Approximately 40 guards at the Tires prison have signed the petition, according to the union, which reports that the signature collection is ongoing.
The new chief was appointed to Tires in early March but was ordered to return to Carregueira, his original post, due to disagreements with the female prison’s director-general after pointing out “serious security breaches” to the prison’s management, as explained by Frederico Morais, president of the SNCGP, to Lusa.
A complaint to the director-general of the Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP) was filed by the Tires establishment director, who “did not appreciate being confronted” with the highlighted security failures. Consequently, the chief returned to Carregueira, the union further stated.
“The guards at Tires appreciated the new chief’s working methods and do not accept the decision of the Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services,” said Frederico Morais. He suggested that the most likely outcome of Thursday’s plenary meeting, scheduled for 11:00 at the prison, could be the call for a local strike.
The reported security issues included “lack of guards, excess of unnecessary activities, excessive external trips for unnecessary medical appointments, and the need to reorganize duty rosters.”
The guard adjutant to the recently retired commissioner has since assumed the leadership at Tires.
