Four locations were evacuated on Sunday “as a precaution” due to the fire that has been blazing since Saturday afternoon in a bush and pine forest area in the parish of São Teotónioon Portugals Atlantic coast in the south of the country, the Civil Protection authority said on Sunday.

According to the Sub-regional Emergency Commander and Civil Protection of Alentejo Litoral, Tiago Bugio, they were evacuated “as a precaution” from the localities of Sobral, Corgos, Choça dos Vales and Relva Grande, all in Odemira county, but the “populations were not at risk”.

The commander acknowledged that the situation “is not easy” due to “the great intensity” of the two fronts of the fire and the wind, that “complicates the fight against flames”.

In addition, he added, it is “an area of difficult access, in which we are using caterpillars to flank the fire”.

The alert for the fire was given at 14:49 on Saturday, and 388 firefighters supported by 115 vehicles of various fire brigades of the Alentejo Coast, Algarve and Baixo Alentejo and 11 aircraft are battling the blaze at the moment.

In a note published on the official page of the municipality on Facebook, the Odemira town hall said that its mayor, Hélder Guerreiro, had activated the Municipal Emergency Plan and Civil Protection, with effect at 14:30 today.

The same source added that Municipal Road 501, in Relva Grande, and Municipal Path 1186, between the localities of São Miguel and Vale dos Alhos, “are affected” by the fire.
