
A police officer was injured and is currently unable to perform duties following the arrest of a man suspected of theft in Leiria.
The detainee is a 45-year-old foreign national who was caught stealing a vehicle at 2:20 PM on Monday near a restaurant at the D. Dinis roundabout.
The vehicle owner witnessed the theft and discreetly pursued the thief after he left the area while simultaneously contacting the authorities.
The officers, guided by the information provided to them, quickly arrived at the scene and managed to confront the suspect.
When approached by the police, the individual reportedly attempted to flee, but was unsuccessful due to the officers’ swift actions, actively resisting arrest. During this incident, one of the officers sustained an arm injury.
The detainee was taken to the Leiria PSP detention rooms and was presented today for summary proceedings. During this, a request for time to prepare a defense was made, resulting in the suspect being released under the measure of Identity and Residence Term.
