Police officer who assaulted ‘tuk-tuk’ driver in Lisbon suspended for 75 days

A suspension proposed by the Inspectorate General of Internal Administration was approved by Margarida Blasco, the former Minister of Internal Administration, on May 22 of this year.

The decision, published today on the IGAI website, imposes a 75-day suspension “for violation of duties of correction and decorum.”

The IGAI report confirms that the actions in question “were committed in the line of duty, in the presence of others, and in a public place.”

The report further states that the officer “acted with direct intent, in its most intense form, neglecting the self-control that was specifically required and acting in a reprehensible manner.” The case gained significant public attention after the video of the assault was shared on social media.

The sanction follows an incident involving an aggression by a PSP officer, serving in the Municipal Police, against a ‘tuk-tuk’ driver. The assault was filmed, with the video showing the officer running towards the driver, accompanied by another officer, and headbutting him.

Following the assault, the then Minister of Internal Administration ordered a disciplinary proceeding against the officer. In a statement issued at the time, Margarida Blasco’s office explained that the decision was taken on the proposal of the then Inspector-General of Internal Administration, Anabela Cabral Ferreira, after a meeting with the Mayor of Lisbon.
