Officers from the Public Security Police (PSP) rescued a baby who “showed no vital signs” last Thursday, November 27, at 2:30 p.m., in Loures.
The police “intervened decisively in the rescue,” as stated by the Lisbon Metropolitan Command in a communiqué sent to the newsrooms.
The statement describes the events: “During a routine patrol, the police were informed by several bystanders that there was an unresponsive baby in a nearby street.”
“Upon receiving this information, they immobilized the police vehicle they were using and immediately proceeded to the location where they observed, inside a building, a group of people, including the child’s father, shouting and urgently calling for help, surrounding a baby approximately one year old, who was unresponsive to any stimulus,” the account continues.
“Immediately,” the note continues, “one of the officers held the baby, placed him facing down on his arm, and began small movements and massages on his back, attempting to stimulate a reaction.”
In “a joint effort,” the other officer “contacted the emergency line 112, relaying the situation, receiving instructions that adequately guided all the maneuvers being performed.”
“After a few seconds,” the “baby began to cry and regained breathing, remaining in the officer’s arms for monitoring of his heartbeats until the arrival of the Loures firefighters,” who transported him to “Beatriz Ângelo Hospital.”
The child “is still under observation” at the mentioned hospital unit, “but apparently not at risk of life,” the PSP also highlights.
It was determined that the father and child were playing when the child experienced convulsions, “frothing at the mouth and showing a very red face, subsequently stopping breathing.”
